Locally & Internationally trained Orthopaedic Surgeon and teacher in Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgery.
David Shepherd is an Australian trained Orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in Foot and Ankle Surgery. He undertook further fellowship training in Oxford, UK and Europe in Foot and Ankle Surgery, Arthroscopic surgery and Total Ankle replacement. He has a particular interest in Patient Specific Total Ankle Replacement and modern techniques for Ankle instability.
He completed his Medical degree at Flinders University in 2001. He completed his Orthopaedic Training in Victoria with the Australian Orthopaedic Association (link to AOA) and the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (link to RACS) and the , and became a Fellow in 2011. David completed a 12 month fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery in Oxford at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Following this he completed surgical visitations with internationally renowned Foot and Ankle surgeons in Bordeaux, Paris and Barcelona in forefoot surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
He then completed a 6 month fellowship in Lyon, France, at the Centre Orthopédique Santy specialising in ankle, hip and knee arthroplasty. He has completed further training in Patient Specific Total Ankle replacement in Vancouver, Canada.
David joined Melbourne Orthopaedic group in 2015.

Total Ankle Replacement
David has a special interest in Total Ankle Replacement.
Post-Graduate Fellowships in Oxford and Lyon focused on Joint Replacment, with further training on Patient Specific Instrumentation in Vancouver.
He is a Consultant for Wright Medical for the Infinity and In-Bone Ankle replacments and trains visiting Orthopaedic Surgeons in Total Ankle Replacement Surgery, including Patient Specific Planning and Operative techniques.
Foot and Ankle International Fellowship Supervisor
David is a Co-Supervisor of the MOG/ Western Foot and Ankle Fellowship. He supervises and trains Internationally trained Orthopaedic surgeons aiming to specialise in Foot and Ankle Surgery. Fellows undertake 6-month terms, assisting in the Private practice and operating as supervised surgeons at Western Health.
Director of Training Australian Orthopaedic Association
David has an Orthopaedic Surgeon appointment at Western Health, in Foot and Ankle surgery, and Trauma. He is the Deputy Head of Orthopaedics, managing Orthopaedic Registrar and Resident training. He is a member of the Board of Studies of Australian Orthopaedic Association. As the Director of Training of Orthopaedics at Western Health he supervises and assesses the accredited trainees of the Australian Orthopaedic Program.
